Saturday, September 21st was a perfect day in Piru’s Warring Park—a day filled with heartfelt moments, celebration, and a deep sense of community. It began at 12:30 PM with Father Barney blessing the renaming of the ballfield, marking a significant moment for Piru’s history.
“One River Stadium” was officially transformed into “Danny’s One River Stadium,” in honor of longtime resident Danny Ramirez and his endless contributions to the community. His legacy of service and commitment to Piru will live on through this beautiful gesture. A stunning mural, painted by local artist Gloria Centurion, now graces the back of the two-story ballfield announcer and equipment building, capturing Danny’s spirit and dedication. Alongside the mural, a plaque was mounted in his remembrance, and new signage proudly reflects the field’s new name.
Several speakers shared their memories and gratitude during the dedication, including Ventura County District 3 Supervisor Kelly Long, Ventura County Parks Director Chism Colter, Piru Youth Services representative Delphina Becera, and Piru Neighborhood Council President Ken Wiseman. The most touching moments came from Danny’s daughter Juanita Mendoza and his son Daniel Ramirez Jr., who spoke on behalf of the family, reflecting on their father’s enduring love for the community.
After the renaming ceremony, more than 200 community members gathered to enjoy an afternoon of music, food, and fellowship. With live performances by Freddy and Friends, Juano and Friends, Los Sencillos, and DJ Dan Ibarra, the park buzzed with energy. Youth played on the newly completed park playscape, visitors explored craft vendors, and the Sespe Creek Car Club put on a fantastic show. It was truly one of the most perfect afternoons of the year, filled with laughter, stories, and shared memories of Piru and Danny.
The celebration continued into the evening, spilling over into downtown Piru, where residents enjoyed more great food, music, and camaraderie. Longtime volunteer and close friend of Danny, Roy Ruiz, captured the feeling perfectly when he remarked, “Did you ever wish a day like today would just never end?”
The event was hosted by the Piru Neighborhood Council (PNC), Piru Youth Sports (PYS), and the newly formed Memorial and Recognition Committee, ensuring Danny’s contributions will be remembered for generations to come.
This was not just a dedication but a celebration of community, love, and the lasting impact one person can have on an entire town. We look forward to many more events like this as we continue to honor Piru’s rich history and the people who shape it.
